Open late August

stream MP3 or RealAudio

I'm driving home to the place where I was born
Riding on a feeling that I need to be there once again
To stand on the beach and relive
With the vast blackness of the sea
Rocking gently like a crib
Towards and away from me
Towards and away from me

And all I want to say
Is I could throw it all away
And let these strange tides rule me
Carry me
Move me

And now I'm here; the salt air tells me so
I can stare at the staircase of the moonlight on the waves
And the string of streetlamps the horizon wears
As a row of fires between heaven and earth
I can hear faint laughter from the rafters of the old haunts
As the couples laugh and chat and flirt
Hey, why don't you sleep together?
And get it over with before you leave this world
Have a string of nights to remember
To leave as fires between heaven and earth

And all I want to say
Is I could throw it all away
And let these strange tides rule me
Carry me
Move me

Could this heart...
Could this heart carry me, carry me the same?

Open late August says a sign in a shopfront
I don't want to think
My paperfolded cat sits on the dashboard in the moonlight
My pet for my afterlife
Maybe I'll write a story
And go and live inside
Maybe I'll let you live inside it
It's more than God did
(More than God did)

And all I'd thought I'd say
Was I could throw it all away
And all I'd thought I'd say
Was I could throw it all away, all away
Strange tides rule me, rule me
(There was once time)
Carry me, carry me
(When the devil still had his wings)
Move me, move me
All I'd say
