The cover design for Throwaway was done in August 2000, much
more recently than the album itself was recorded. Until this point, the album had been in
bare CD/cassette cases. The CD has a tray insert and a two page (two single sides) inner booklet: |
Front cover |
I took the front cover photograph a few years ago on a trip to Alnwick. I spotted this cloud/vapourtrail formation out of the car window and luckily had my camera with me to snap it - the original photo is in colour. I thought this was a striking image for the album cover, and captured the feel I wanted. |
Inner page |
The photograph for the inner page of the CD booklet was taken
looking out at the waves on the long sands.beach, Tynemouth, near to where I was born and
grew up. The original photo is in black and white, taken by myself. I think black and
white captures the feel of the North Sea more than colour. Strangely, I think the sea photos on the cover are really more connected to the album's closing track, "Open Late August", than any of the other tracks on the album:

Back cover |
I took the photo for the back cover on the long sands beach, Tynemouth, on the same
day as I took the photo for the inner page. Again, this is a black and white original. The footsteps coming out of the sea are mine. Again, this is capturing the transient beauty and strangeness I wanted for Throwaway's cover. Both the footsteps and the cloud formation were lost after the photographs were taken. |
